Hi...I find people that talk too much to be very very annoying, they seem to hold you as a "captive audience" and it can be a form of low level torture. As she is your neighbour, this makes puts you in an undesirable position of "built-in captive audience" for this woman. Despite her condition, which is indeed sad, it might ease the situation by diplomatically telling her that you believe in "good fences make good neighbours" and you prefer to keep to yourself and not mingle with those who live close by. This gives both of you an "out" without feelings getting hurt when she is aware that you practice this not simply because of her, but that you apply it to all your neighbours. (I do see a possibility of being social with other neighbours, maybe just keep it discreet for a bit till she gets the message?)

Avoiding her or telling her she talks too much is going to hurt her feelings. Avoidance is just as rude, really.
That isn't to say you oughtn't be rude if the situation demands it - some people are emotional vampires and rudeness is the only remedy.
However, if you want this woman to continue to think well of you, you will need to be far more cunning.
Perhaps you could tell her that you feel uncomfortable hearing about her personal issues (for the truly advanced - this can be because of all the "personal issues" it raises for you and is an excuse for a soliloquy of your own) or that you only have limited time and specify the appointment you have (you can't do this every time though).
Sometimes just sitting there thinking your own thoughts as her words swirl around you may be considered as a zen meditation of sorts.

Just keep trying to avoid her. Try not to be cruel, especially if you have to live next to her for the next few years. Saying something would make things even more uncomfortable. As long as she doesn't visit you in your home and overstay her welcome you should be able to avoid her.

well, unless you plan on moving in the future, i wouldnt say anything, just be kind. she probably is lonely or has a mental problem. its sad that you feel that you have to avoid someone in your own yard, but, saying something i think would be rude and afterwards would be awkward for both of you to see each other.

It would be rude to tell her, if you do run into her just say hi and keep walking, the secret is not to turn around because if you do you are hooked

Go with your gut- avoid her. If she has emotional or mental problems, it's even a more difficult issue, but even if she's just lonely and chatty, avoidance is the best way to handle her.

Avoid her. She is who she is. Besides, you'll just hurt her if you tell her.
It sucks, but you gotta keep avoiding her.

Tell her she is driving you crazy and cannot stand to be near her. Who cares if she is hurt by what you say. Fu_k the B_tch.
