Renate is correct. If she could prove that she was unable to return to the US within one year of departure due to circumstances beyone her control, she might have been able to successfully apply for an SB1 (retgurning resident) visa. But because she has been gone so long and turned her card in voluntarily, she has no further right to return. Someone will have to petition for her, and do the entire immigration process all over again.

It's possible, but very doubtful given the amount of time that's passed. She might be able to make a convincing case if it had only been a short time, but after 6 years I'd say she's out of luck.

She has to go through the whole process again. Someone has to sponsor her, etc.
