He was interested in collections of iconic images. Hence the Monroe prints and the Campbell tomato soup tins. This repetion can be seen in some of Damian Hirsts painting with repeated dots.
The idea of iconic images is International - look at the Che Guevara T shirts and many images from cinema (Greta Garbo at the the stem of a ship in Queen Christina is repeated in the film Titanic)

Yes, Andy Warhol's image laden in your face prints had an effect on British and European cultures. In fact, when I was in London in 1985, the Tate Museum had a exhibition of Warhol's paintings, including the Marilyn Monroe multi-image. Another famous Warhol painting was his Campbell soup can. Another media icon. Warhol's effect was mostly in how artwork is perceived rather than artist's skills. Picasso started this 10 years before Warhol. It's not the work itself that sells the painting by the artist's name. Because he was Picasso, or because he was Warhol, the painting is worth money, regardless the quality of the art. The English punk movement of the 70s was a reaction to this star celeb artist pretensions.

The larger question - is there such a thing as British culture?

Warhol's gift was not so much creation as it was a particular reflective vision. The reason his Marilyn Monroe prints were a hit was precisely because she was so famous. He did the same thing with a Campbell soup can - but he didn't create anything except new ways of looking at things we new.

Which started a great debate at the time about whether or not it was art.

Which certainly influenced the way other people prresented their own visions.
