Retired after 20+ years and was granted a 100% VA service connected disability.

She says she can't work, least of all full time...can't believe that's all she's expected to live on. Does the military have such a total hold on your life, even after you retire? I know it does while you are in the uniform.

YES SHE DOES receive both a retirement check and a disability check.
I was so nosy! that I asked her why she wasn't working.
My sis gets a check cause she was in for over 20 years and then she retired. Then cause she was 100% disabled, (you can't see a thing to show a disability), she gets another check.

She's not collecting a military retirement. She's collecting a disability check. Big, big difference.

I retired from the navy on a Friday and went back to work on Monday.

That one is tricky. My cousin's husband get a partial disability from the military and he works full time. I don't know about a 100% disability though. Maybe someone else has the answer for that one. Usually 100% disability from the military means there is no military job you can do.

I am retired Air Force and work full time. Other than collecting my retirement benefits, I don't have much to do with the military.

Maybe it is because if this person can work full time, she proves she isn't really disabled and will lose the disability.

yes, you can work again. You can retire as young as 37 and then work as a civilian or get a civilian job with the military too. But basically you can have 2 pay checks coming in. My uncle did that with the Navy. He went in as a doctor of some sort and retired and then worked as a doctor as a civilian. Great huh?!

You can work and retain your military pension. I suspect that she is unable to work due to her disability.

If you don't like this - you should ask Congress repeal the law that reduces a military pension by the amount of VA disability a person receives. (Of course with a Democratic Congress - this repeal is not likely to happen.)

Yes. I'm a medical claims examiner and paid many a claim for retired military people.

If you have a 100% disability from VA you can not work, period. And if you do you will loose your 100% disability. Good luck.
