When people have colds sometimes the Eustachian tube gets blocked up and the presence of bacteria or virus lead the fluid to build up (pus and mucus) behind the ear drum, this is called acute otitis media, the build up of the pus and mucus causes pressure and pain in the ear leading to an infection, sometimes the ear drum will rupture and the pus will drain out, but more commonly the pus and mucus remain the the middle ear due to the inflamed Eustachian tube, doctors can prescribe antibiotics to get rid of the infection, these are normally penicillin, fluoxicillian, you would feel some relief after taking the antibiotics within 48 hours, go to your doctor and ask if this is the case

when I have a cold that happens to me from my sinuses. However you could have an ear infection so without meaning to annoy you, if it persists after your cold goes away or starts to hurt, see your doctor.
Nothing you can really do to cure this annoying problem.

Try aiming a hairdryer set on "low" at the inflamed ear- the warmth can help relieve the discomfort.
