Getting the belt is abuse - your friend should seek help from one of the support systems for children who have been physically or sexually abused. You don't say how old your friend is; all young children tell fibs and it's part of good parenting to gently teach them that this is wrong, but not by threatening them. It could be that he's so afraid of getting belted that he tells lies as a way of concealing even his normal activities from his family (I'm trying to say that if his parents are inconsistent in their attitudes towards him he may not know what they want and so tries to 'keep his head down' and that will engage their wrath).

It sound as if his parents don't have a particularly happy marriage (or they're going through a very bad patch) but you also have to think about his brothers and sisters - if he has any - and the fact that they may be in danger too.

If he's at school, then it's perfectly possible (I don't know which country you live in) that his teachers have a legal duty to report signs of abuse and violence to the authorities. In which case I'd try to have a word with one of his teachers about your concerns; I'd also talk to your parents if you possibly can because you shouldn't be carrying this worry alone.

I hope this helps and I'll be thinking about you and your friend.

not only is that child abuse its child neglact i would tell your friend to tell the school conclor so that he can get social serves and get a better home or get your friends parents help. its better to help thean to stay in a situation like that i should know and if your friend doesn't want to do it then you should cause that can lead to depression suscide and being screwed up for the rest of there life.

the belt is abuse- and if they tell him to get out, it could be- depending on how long they expect him to stay gone and what the certain circumstance is.
