I've been in transit in Madrid last 2005 without a transit visa coz i arrived & depart from the same terminal. But now i'm not so sure because i will be arriving in terminal 4 and my connecting flight will be in terminal 1 the following day.

Contact the Spanish embassy, I do not think you need one.
