I've been talking to an athiest friend and I asked him what did he think would happen after this life? He simply answered that the 'afterlife' such as Heaven or Hell is made up to ease and cope with the emotional strain when a loved one is no longer there. And from other things he told me I would say that he does not believe in the soul either. Finally, that religion was created to control the masses.
How could I explain these things to him without making him feel put down or critisized? Any proof and comments are appreciated.

You won't be able to - because you'll try to offer scripture in the place of actual rational argument. Atheists won't accept blind conjecture.

Think about it: if we weren't aware of our existence before we came into this life, what makes you think we'll be aware of our existence after this life? Your atheist friend is correct - the assumption SHOULD be that we go back into oblivion; precisely where we came from.

Religion was to control the masses. Why do you think there's an entire book of "rules" to "live by"? If it was really just about worshipping god, there wouldn't need to be a book, now would there?

He's rightfully rejecting the ego-based projections of God, the focus of which is the mistake of both believers and atheists. If we were to concentrate on getting a direct experience, all this sillyness with concepts would go away. There is no hell, just love. Forget about trying to teach him anything - go for a direct experience and your mindset will come forth.

He's absolutely correct. Your mind creates your thoughts. When you die, it's over.

Religion was originally formed to explain things in nature that are difficult to understand. It has also been used to control the masses.

Just explain it.

Just don't get put off or feel mad when he doesn't change his viewpoint.

That's how most of us feel about the "afterlife".

Simply put, there is none.

He's right. Existence before and after life is just chemical goo.
