Please excuse this excerpt from my book:
How do we know that we, the Earth, live or exist in a universe?
Well, everyone has to be somewhere, and, we have certainly considered the alternatives.
One alternative is that we, the Earth, are alone in space, and, are simply watching a downtown Las Vegas light show. (SSUW- So Says Uncle Wayne)
Over the course of the last few thousand years, we have learned that, if we do exist, we are rotating and circling around our sun. It seems that we have been doing that, or something similar to that, for about the last 4 billion years. (SSTS -So Say the Scientists)
Our Sun: One of those shiny hot objects among all those other shiny hot objects in our realm of sight, observation, and study.
It wasn't always our sun, of course, it came from somewhere else. More specifically, it was once a part of something else; probably not from an ice cube*, but from a very hot object. Well, anyway, it has probably been, approximately, where it is for a little more than 4 billion years. (SSTS -So Say the Scientists)
*Of course, it could have come from an ice cube. What are the ingredients of an ice cube? Answer: Water (H2O)
Can you guess why our Sun could have come from an ice cube? Does hydrogen ring a bell?
How do we, the Earth, know that we exist?
Maybe, we are in someone's dream; a figment of that person's imagination. But, that would, even by circular logic, lead us back to the conclusion that that person is somewhere, and has recollections of seeing, observing, studying, and predicting consequences of "A splattering of hot, illuminating, objects scattered across the expanse of his universe".
Of course, we exist, in somewhat the way that we realize, lest we would not be having this conversation in such detail. The word "detail" is a rather controversial subject at this point in time. Does nanotechnology ring a bell? Both sides claim that the "detail of our existence" proves that they are "right", and, that their adversaries are "wrong". (Duh?)

Who says I exist? And how did I bring about this illusion? And is there such a thing as "eternity" to "pass by"? Even the Hindu theologians who maintain that all is Brahman acknowledge that Atman is "real", that we necessarily have to operate in the world we perceive. So don't take things too seriously, and get back to work!

Ultimate truth is difficult to percieve by everyone. So Different doctrines are applied till one experiences it himself. Else it remain a matter of belief.

I have never thought otherwise. Now I've got my minor creations asking questions! I'd better go and fix that.
