18 inch subs are commonly used in professional sound reinforcement applications. Anything over that becomes harder to control the movement of the cone. Several manufactures make 22 inch speakers but most amps can not control such a big cone. I used to play with a band and our sound guy had a cabinate that held 4 18" subs and it would knock your socks off. I believe Sensuround sound in theaters used a 32 inch sub.

The largest diameter subwoofer I have found is 22". I have seen
it at the 2000 CES in Las Vegas. Awesome bass for sure!

yeah a smaller port diameter makes it tuned lower, but it also increases the port velocity (the speed of the air moving in and out). If you dont make the port big enough you will hear the air moving in and out and it will not sound good at all. It is know as port noise. Finding the right size port to fit into your box and to get the correct tuning, all while trying to make it sound good is a delicate balance

Thank you Teddy S for asking about the size of the biggest subwoofer. At times, I was wondering about that also.

for a home theatre i would suggest a 10 or a 12 but some subs are too bassy for music so make sure you pick carefully i would suggest a paradigm or a subsonic those are the ones i prefer
