A normal cat lifespan can be up to 15 years. Although is well cared for it is not uncommon to occasional hear of a cat living up to 22 yrs.

Great Danes don't have a long life span. They can live up to 8 - 10 years, depending on the dog's size and health. Unfortunately large breed dogs are not known for a long life as a small bred dog, example.. maltese, chihuahuas...

Every animal can have a long & healthy life as long as the proper diet, vet care and exercise is provided.

A well cared for cat can live up to about 20 years if it is healthy. I put my 18-year-old Otto down on 12/30/05 because his kidneys were failing. We also have three others that are in great shape and one is about 10 years old.

As for dogs, specifically Great Danes, I am not sure other than I have heard that larger breeds do not live as long as smaller ones.

Maybe you could research some more on a pet site.

Hope this helps.

The cats I have owned have had lifespans from 14 to 19 years.

My vet says he sees a lot of cats that are 14; not so many that are 15; very few that are 16 and 17, and after that it's a rare cat that makes it to 18 and beyond.

Two things that you can do to extend a cat's life: first, keep it indoors. On average, indoor only cats live 8 years longer than cats that are allowed outdoors.

Second, have the cat's teeth cleaned/descaled on an as-needed basis. There are some vets who believe that the buildup of tartar and bacteria, and infections that occur from bad teeth in older cats, can lead to kidney failure and heart trouble. It's true that without exception, the cats that I've known that have lived the longest are the ones who get their teeth cleaned periodically.

Third, talk to your vet about what kind of diet they recommend. One of the primary causes of feline mortality is kidney failure, which is affected by diet.
