I'd be wary of candles as they tend to blow out easy and carry a huge risk of fires. Watch America's Home Videos and see all the fires at weddings.
I've seen some lovely things with my favorite being parasols (the pictures turned out very nice). Fans also turn out lovely. I've seen some people carry heart shaped pillows (sort of like the pillow that the ring bearer carries (that was OK). Oh I saw one that was a mascarade theme and the ladies carried masks (I think they even got to decorate them themselves) . If done right it's very lovely. I've seen balloons, but I didn't like that very much. One person I know had wands. I also seen a smaller wedding where the bridesmaids (there were only the maid of honor and one more) carried very elegant books and then during the ceremony read a passage from them. Another one they carried little boxes that almost looked like treasure chests, Inside they carried items that were used during the ceremony, like the matches to light the unity candle. I've seen some people use pursues, but I thought it distracted from the look and made them seem ready to bolt. I know someone who carried scrolls which when they walked back down the asile were undone and ready happily ever after.... It was actaully very very cute.....
It would help if you would add colors, details of the place you are being married, indor outdoors etc.

I had a couple with three bridal attendants, they each carried a specific candle down the aisle. The two bridesmaids carried the taper candles, the maid of honor carries the Unity Pillar Candle. the put them on the table and take their places. Absolutely beautiful and many, many guests complimented on the uniqueness.

I had a friend who had callolillies in her wedding and each bridesmaid held one of the flowers from her bouquet but I'm not sure if thats what you want.
I think candles would be pretty, maybe in a small glass bowl.

All I have to say is....... if your going to carry something else.... have one of your bridesmaids get in the dress and hold the object. Then takes some digital pictures of her and decided.
I personally think that flowers make the photograph.... carrying candles and other objects looks informal and strange.
The stuff animal thing- creeps me out....
Or another idea that photographs nicely is those crystal bouquets they are selling now. They are pretty easy to make with some nice crystals and wire. try firemountain.com for crystal beads and supplies.

I went to a wedding once where the theme was "a celebration of our love"...everything looked like a 6 year olds birthday party...balloons, streamers all in bright colors...the bridesmaids held a bunch of balloons instead of bouquets.
Do you or your hubby-to be have any favorite animals or pets?...then they could carry a stuffed animal bouquet.
Any common interests? Use whatever you can to make it original and truly your own.
If music is your common ground...make a bouquet out of some old CD's...so many options!!!

I was in a wedding this winter and we had muffs over our hands. It was beautiful. The muffs were gray/white-ish and our dresses were a deep red.
I suppose they don't have to carry anything. Maybe they could wear long gloves as their accessory.
If it's a religious wedding, how about carrying down parts of the mass (wine, bread, Bible). If it's a patriotic wedding, how about small American flags.
