I think it's less about carat size and more about choosing a ring that is uniquely suited to the woman. I know for me, I would prefer 1 carat, but I would be much more particular about the setting and style and would want something that either was or felt like an estate style. An engagement ring should really be indicative of what you feel she truly embodies. Classic, funky, modern, etc...

My personal preference is nothing too big (I'm sure you're excited to hear that ;) ). Anything larger than two carats on a woman's hand begins to look fake and tacky. You can also get away with less carats if your wife-to-be has smaller hands. For instance, I have small hands, which makes my one carat diamond look like two carats!
If I can recommend a place to look for the ring, it'd be White Flash ( http://www.whiteflash.com/ ). That's where my fiancé went to get my ring specially made; they were great to work with, from what I heard! (Just read their testimonials.)
Good luck!

I got engaged back in Aug 06 and I love the size of my diamond. I don't care what carat it is frankly, it fits perfectly on my hand.
Besides, I'd rather my fiancee get a little diamond and save the money he would have spent on either our honeymoon or a house instead of putting thousands of dollars into an engagement ring.

i'm weird, so i don't like diamonds. they're boring to me. so, my ring was special ordered with a garnet stone. i'm not sure but i think the point of the diamond would have been 12. 33 points is 1/3 carat, so not huge. but we also had it special ordere to be a higher kt gold than what was offered, but it's not the size of the gem that matters, it's the love and meaning behind it. oneof my firnds doesn't even have a gem in her engagemtn ring! it dpends on the woman in question. ask her her preferences.

Every woman is different. Some cuts of diamonds look bigger than another - and some look smaller. I went with the main stone as 1.5 and the total carat weight of the ring being 3.3. My preference ONLY.

My dream size is about 1 carat center stone with some small side stones channel set into the band.

1 carat, I have the simple Tiffany's solitare, 1 carat & I get A LOT of compliments.
I have small hands, so I'd imagine anything bigger wouldn't look as good.

Ideal a two carat ring.... I almost have that and I love it, its so beautiful and it really does look huge... anything bigger than that is just for the really wealthy, considering a 2 carart rings runs about $20,000 for a good one.
