I think technically yes, you're taking product without paying... but I doubt you'd get thrown behind bars for eating a couple grapes. Just... don't eat an entire bag full.

Sometimes I open a bottle of water or soda to drink while I am shopping if I am really thirsty. But if it is something that has to be weighed to determine the price, then it is stealing. If it is a bag of pre-priced grapes, then I don't see a problem other than the washing issue, because you're going to buy it anyway. I have seen mostly empty bottles of soda sitting back in the cooler, etc. Come on, people. That's not even a gray area!

I'm not sure how you can even wonder about this. Of course it is shoplifting. If the store is offering sample, fine and if you use the excuse that you want to see if the grapes are any good, well you should find a clerk and ask if it is OK to sample.

If your were snacking on grapes or bulk candy, or anything that had to be weighed to figure out the price, then that would be shoplifting. However, if you were to open a package of cookies, or a 20 oz drink or something of the sourt and snack on that, it would not be considered shoplifting, so long as you pay for it at the check out.

I used to work in the produce dept of a grocery store, and people always would take a grape or two ff a bunch to check the taste. Flavors aren't that consitent, so what you buy one week might be very sweet and very bitter the next. I didn't really mind if people took one or two to try and find a decent bunch, but one you put it in the cart or basket, hands off.

I always wondered that. When I was a kid I used to always do it when my mom wasnt looking. I am pretty sure its like shoplifting but I doubt they would really say anything. Pretty excuseable for a child but an adult doing this well that is just bad manners.

i hope it's not shoplifting! usually the grapes havent been washed and have been sitting there in the store for who knows how long, so it may not be the best idea!

People have been doing exactly that for many years. Good question about the shoplifting, though - I've wondered that myself.

If you take a grape or two to taste them, it is only to taste. It is not shoplifting.
