If your head says scam, you can bet it is. (Likewise if your head says, "this is too good to be true" it is) (a) This is not the way legitimate sweepstakes or lotteries work. (b) The piece you are missing is how these scams work: Your bank will let you withdraw the money after a set number of days even though the check has not actually cleared yet. It will eventually bounce back to the bank and they will demand you pay them back. In between these two events (which can be as much a month apart), the scammer will try to get you to pay him or her a portion of the money the bank gave you in cash -- or some untraceable way like a money order. My guess is that is what the "payment to some government agency" is about. They are going to get you to cash the $2680, get you to give them $500 and when the bank demands the $2680 back, they will be no where to be found. (c) The IRS (the only legit federal taxing agency) doesn't work that way either.

There are several scams like this especially linked to internet (supposed friends) talkers. They had some come out of Africa that were re-inking money orders for higher value so doing it with checks is also possible. You can always take it to the bank and see if it's valid and from a valid account. For an amount that much they will hold the deposit until the check clears anyway.

SCAM ALL THE WAY- the check will bounce in a couple of days and you will have to pay the money back to the bank.
NOTE: anyone with a 48,000 check can obviously open there own account.

Do NOT deposit that check. It will eventually get returned to them and then they will have your account number on it.

All day long I deal with people who have fallen for this or similar scams. Save me some work, please.

I wouldn't if I was you. Especially if you dont know where the check comes from. If it is so legit, why dont just cash it themselves? Dont let them sucker you in.
