Most people would recommend using Firefox as your default browser due to its more secure design. If you want to reset your default browser to the one you were using before, you will need to change associations for html file types. If you were using Internet Explorer (IE), then by starting IE you will be prompted to set Internet Explorer as your default browser.

No browser is 100% safe, you open a port when you come online. But FF is safer than IE because it doesn't support Active X, which can be used to install software on your pc.
Just have a firewall (not the Windows one), Spywareblaster, Spybot Search and Destroy and an anti virus succh as AVG 7.5 or Avast, both of which scan in real time.
If you check out this weeks Webuser mag you'll also find an article about sandboxes, which make your browser safer.

There's a list of security software on ym blog and I post it several times a day...

That fairly undemanding applying a Mozilla Firefox as a default browser. basically attempt this one.. basically 'precise click' on the taskbar then click 'properties' after that 'start up menu'.'customize' then "teach on activity bar" click a 'locate Firefox', click 'ok' and then it is it! ^_^

The ULTIMATE bullet-proof combination is using Opera 9 with Linux through a SSH tunnel, with a good firewall. That is basically untouchable.

But Firefox 2 with XP and a good firewall is good - vastly better than Internet Explorer.

Firefox is safer and faster than Internet Explorer. It shouldn't make a lot of difference, if you use it as your default browser.

Firefox is a far superior browser in my opinion. Its generally thought that Firefox is more secure than Micro$oft Internet Explorer.

That is open to debate, Microsoft says, Internet Explorer is safest and most secure, while Firefox says they are, I use Firefox and I have had no problems!

Due to the low number(compared to MS) who use Firefox, there are not as many threats. I look for that to change as more people begin to use it.
Just like in business, where you go where the money is, hackers tend to go where they can cause the most commotion.
