Yes, no matter how big/small the crack is, the longer you drive with it, the bigger it will get.

It's illegal, (possibly in every state), but no, not dangerous if it does not interfere with your vision.

The glass is two layers thick, on a polymeric backing to hold it all together. A crack in one layer doesn't create a risk. A significant risk to safety wont appear until you have two layers cracked in the same area.

However, if it DOES impede your ability to see in any way, it becomes an immediate danger to you, and those around you.

If you have a crack as you described, and it's illegal in your state, your auto insurance will cover the cost of replacing the windshield without affecting your policy in any way.

To minimize the spread of the crack, simply take a glass cutter (a diamond ring works) and scratch an "x" at the ends of the crack lines (on the same glass layer as the crack). It means that it requires 4 times the pressure to lengthen the crack beyond that point.

I would get it fixed as soon as possible. With the weather like it is, every time you turn your heat on it's going to crack even more. Here in Georgia, you can get fined for a crack in your windshield. Yes, it could be dangerous

It depends on the crack. I've driven for months with cracks in my windshield without any interference. But even though it might not be dangerous, it is highly illegal (you'll get a ticket if a cop spots it).

usually it's no big thing but a lot of cracks will weaken the windshield and in way too many cars these days the windshield is part of the structure of the car, so if it goes all the way across get it replaced

Only if the crack is across the windshield and large enough to leave gaping holes. Windshield are strong enough to hold together. After all it is only a crack.

I've been driving with a crack in my windshield for over 7 months. It's gotten bigger, but I haven't found it to be unsafe.

No. I've been driving with a long crack in my windshield for two years. As long as it passes state inspection, I'm saving my money.

It's very dangerous. Think of it like this. Ever flown a kite? It flies by air pushing against it. If the wind is strong, the kite has more air pushing against it, and it flies higher. Think about how much flat space a kite takes up. Now think about how much flat space your windshield takes up. Think about that flat space with 60 mph of wind hitting it. Scary huh?

It sounds like it could be dangerous. If it is a crack then this will reduce the integrity of the screen and if anything hits the screen it could prove troublesome.
