When I try and open a ppt, xls or doc file I get an info window that says, "Windows Installer Preparing to Install" then "please wait will windows configues 2003 Microsoft Ofiice". Eventually it opens the file but takes forever. I tried to do a repair and it tells me that there was a fatal error before installation could complete. Any ideas?

Try removing the office program and then do a clean up of your registry with CCleaner, which is free, great, and you can get it here:

http://www.cnet.com/downloads

There is a search box in the upper right hand corner of this page, put in ccleaner and hit search, a new page will open with related utilites, scroll down to ccleaner and click on the link, which will then take you to the CCleaner download page. Read the reviews and all the features, then download and use it to clean up after removing the office program.

Once you have finished cleaning up your system from the removal, now install the program again. It should work now. If not, call Microsoft technical assistance via the support site.

Good luck and have a great day.

Run a "Detect and Repair":

Open any office application (i.e. Word)
Go to Help -> "Detect and Repair".
Finally, go to:
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com
and run the office updater to get the newest bug-fixes.

If that fails, reinstall office.

Is this on a networked computer at a company or large business where Office was installed over the network?

Make sure your disk is spotless and try reinstalling.
