When in January are you traveling? Starting on January 23, 2007, a valid passport will be required to fly internationally from/to U.S. including from/to places on this side of the world like mexico, canada, and the bahamas where passengers have been able to show a certified copy of their birth certificate as proof of citizenship instead of a passport. The state department keeps postponing the date to give people more time to get passports, but as of today, this is the current deadline.
You can apply at courthouses or certain post offices that accept passport applications; however, the normal processing time is TWO-THREE MONTHS. They can "expedite" it, so you receive your passport in the mail in THREE-FOUR WEEKS. Be wary if they tell you it will be faster because this is crunch time. Everyone is applying for passports now, and the passport agency is backed up. Cost for a first-time adult passport is $97 normal or $157 expedited plus cost of photos and shipping to and from the passport agency. www.travel.state.gov/passport
If you need a passport faster, there are companies that specialize handling rush emergency passports. They have special relationships with the passport agency. One company is International Visa Service 1-800-627-1112. They have an office inside the Atlanta airport and another office in Sandy Springs (Atlanta). They can have your passport issued in one business day.

Yes, any US citizen travelling ANYWHERE outside the US borders will need a passport in January.
Go to the post office and apply today. It takes several weeks to get one, even with Rush processing and delivery.
Take along 2 passport-sized photos, taken at Kinkos, Walmart, or someplace like it. Sometimes the post office can/will take the photos.
Expect to spend about $100 or more per passport.

yes you do. Thank the Secretary of Paranoia for that one. Americans need a passport to get back into their own country from anywhere in the world via airplane as of late January.
It takes 4-8 weeks or longer if it's busy. You can pay extra for express, which is probably the smarter thing to do- either that or postpone your trip.

Find the nearest passport office that can do same day service for you. There is additional fees for this, but since the new rules go into effect next month I am sure there are going to be long delays in even expedited service.

I'm not sure if it's been enacted yet but very soon you will need a passport to go anywhere outside the US.
I got mine within a week but the GOV was paying for it. I think it took my mom a few weeks to get her's, I don't remember how much it was though.
