The Global Express is a more technologically advanced plane, however, Bombardier's support is shameful, while Gulfstream has the best in service support.
So, in the end, what is best? The technology, the optimal design, or the fact you can actually use it? Your call.
For "Brian P": both the GEX and the G5550 use the SAME engine, the RR BR710, with minor variations.
For "calnickel": the GEX is NOT based on a regional airliner. It has a different wing, a different rear fuselage, different tail, different engine, different avionics (unfortunately-- the black box parameter definition is a bit weird while that of the CRJ is a joy to work with); the only thing it has in common with the regional jet is the fuselage cross section dimension, and the general outline of the nose/cockpit. The CRJ is actually based on the Challenger business airplane, so this is where the roots of the GEX (and the CRJ) are: in a luxury -- albeit smaller than the GEX -- business aircraft.

I have worked on both aircraft. The most mechanical friendly aircraft is the G550 and the most dependable. The GLEX is a very good aircraft if you are going to fly the aircraft alot. Both of these aircraft are not design to turn alot of cycles (landing and takeoffs)through out the year. 2000 cycles seems to be the magic number for both. The GLEX is more likely to have the upper hand when it comes to endurance but the G550 is still the Caddy of the sky.

Last year I had to make performance analysis at the university for a course, and my group had to analyze the Global Express, and one of the points of this work was a comparison with others similar airplanes.
The Global Express BD700 and the Gulfstream G550 were almost coincident for all aspects. They are very similar in configuration, weight and design, same engines, the same thrust to weight ratio(of course the same engine and the same weight give the same thrust to weight ratio), almost the same range, payload, ecc.
Global Express seem to be a little faster in very long range cruise, but this kind of performances are influenced by a lot of conditions, and the performances were not in the exact same condition so I consider those 2 kind of airplanes to be almost the same aircraft, although they are made by 2 different manufacturers.

I have no idea what to say about the Bombardier but the G550 is AWESOME!!!! TALK ABOUT QUIET!!! They were doing photo shoots of the 450 and 550 in my hometown a little less than a year ago and i was on the beach watching them fly over.... The G550 came over at <500 feet directly over the beach and I did NOT hear that plane at all until it passed me and even then it wasn't much louder than a whisper. AMAZINGLY QUIET.

I'm a bit partial to the Global based mainly because of the technolgy that went into the design of the aircraft. It was truly designed from a clean slate and is equipped with "triple redundacy" on all its safety features to ensure there that there is a back-up system for the back-up system. The wing is also an engineering marvel that makes independent adjustments based on situational weather conditions. The wings design is also what allows the Global to land on shorter runways giving you access to many more Executive airports around the world. There's a reason why Oprah just purchased one and she's terrified of flying.

The Gulfstream has a much better Flight hour and maintenance record than the Bombardier. They are both excellent aircraft.

The better I guess is the one that:
1. Carries the most stuff (people & their things).
2. Flies the longest distance of a full tank.
3. Flies fastest.
4. Flies highest.
5. Costs less to fly/maintain.
6. Looks best (aesthetics).
7. Is more advanced.
...for you.
