garbage bin anyway. How many times do I have to tell him that we recycle in this house and cans are recycleables! Does anyone else have problems convincing others to be more earth-friendly?

Lead by example. Many men will do the opposite of what they are told, so don't tell him, do it, dig in the garbage and remove the recyclables, soon enough if he loves you he won't want to see you dig in the garbage anymore and will start recycling on his own.

I have had problems, mainly with older people. It's probably because their generations simply didn't develop the habit- after all, recycling in their days was probably limited to scrap metal collection for war efforts, composting kitchen waste, or returning old-style, refillable glass soda bottles. Also, what is recycled varies considerably from community to community. My parent's town hardly recycles anything anymore, while my close friend's recycles a wide range of things- from spray cans to styrofoam. Sometimes, visitors to her place will put things in the trash literally not knowing they're recyclable.

Around my house, my family is now so willing to put things into the recycle bin that they sometimes put things in there that aren't recyclable. I just pick them out and don't say anything because I don't want to discourage them.

start charging a doller onto his rent everytime he throws it in the trash. If he cannot respect your wishes then he needs to be taught a lesson.
