If it is a DVD -R , then you can erase it...If it is a RW, im not sure if they make them, then you can. I know you can do it with CD-RW

You cannot erase a DVD-R disc as it can be used only once. If you want a disc that you can erase and re-write, then you would have to buy a DVD-RW disc instead.
To summarise: any disk that ends in RW is re-writeable, but any disc that ends in R is useable once only. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

For starters dvd-r is a one time write cd. If you want to be able to rewrite on the disc you'll need to buy dvd-/+rw cd's. But make sure your dvd drive can do either of those. Most can but if you don't have one that is able to use dvd-/+rw disc's you'll have to get a new drive.
