Ok I just got engaged and I picked out my ring.

Before you buy anything you need to realize that this is important but don't go in debt for it.

I got a certified diamond and it a carat. It is aboslutley beautiful for like $2200.00. It retails at like $3200. Your best bet to buy a great diamond is to buy one from either Zales or Jared. Depending on how much you want to spend. And buy one during high sales time for them. Like day after thanksgiving, xmas or valentines. They are more likely to cut a great deal because they get incentives for those times.

So answering your question, they all matter.

Carat- Don't get a teeny thing, but don't get her a mountain. keep it to a 3/4-1 carat. Bigger diamonds need to be earned. Like anniversaries. Keep it classy too. nothing like those little diamonds or something from walmart.

Color- Do your homework. Make sure it has certification. Look at the diamond. Does it look clean? Because the color could be G but it could look so clear. Sometimes they are off on those certifications. That benefits you. You get the better deal.

Clarity- If you cannot see it with the naked eye or right away, then it isn't important. Who is gonna be examining the ring anyways? Just her and you. But I wouldn't go any lower than SI1-2.

Also keep this in mind, A diamond is just like a snowflake, no two are alike. I hope this helps.

they are equally important, and they all matter! its almost like a sliding scale.

If the carat is small, the color, cut, and clarity dont have to be as nice because it isnt as noticable. (but whats the point of a diamond if it isnt noticable?)

If the carat is big, the color, CUT (cut is what makes a diamond sparkle because of the way light hits it, so if a diamond has a nice cut you will notice it from across the room), and clarity become much more important (with color being more important than clarity, and clarity being more important than cut in my opinion).

For better or worse:
-you notice carat from far away and close up
-you notice color from close up
-you notice clarity from close up
-you notice cut from far away

Would I rather have a big diamond with bad color, cut, and clarity or a tiny diamond that has good color, cut, and clarity? ehh six to one, half dozen to the other...you would scrunch your nose at either.

#1 !!!! above all else - CLARITY!!
#2 Color - but you can get away with a wide range of colors - just don't go to high on the scale - or to low.
Carat....truthfully - carat is all about who wants to look like they have the most money. A diamond is an investment. QUALITY over size - any day

Carat
Clarity
Color

Size matters most when it comes to diamonds. And since no one wants a dull rock on their hands, clarity and sparkle should be a close second to number one! And lastly, the color. There are a lot of neat trick to go with this one, such as if the diamond has a yellow tint, placing it in a white gold or platinum setting will minimize the flaw while a gold setting will only highlight it...
Hope this helped!!

I like the sparkle best. So probably clarity, color, carat.
You definitely want a visible stone though, don't go for miniscule.
I have a 3 stone for engagement and a five stone for wedding band. was not even 1,000 dollars...but it's still sparkles and always looks great. I think the 2nd ring (the five stone) really made it perfect.

Honestly, I have to say, "All three".
However, in terms of priority , it will have to be clarity and grade first, carat, and color for the last.
PS
Diamonds plus another gemstone would even be lovelier.

I would rather have a small diamond that has the best color, cut and clarity, rather than a "my god is it real" sized diamond that is of lesser quality. My preference is quality over size.

4 carats, round diamond, side diamonds, and all flawless - that would be the ultimate :)

I've got all the above except the 4 carats - mine is a 1 carat - and it's beautiful :)
