I have tasted good screw cap fine wine. The screwcap has nothing to do with taste anymore than cork.

it has nothing to do with more expensive or cheap wine having screw cap. Some of it is based on tradition. But more and more wines are being contaminated by the real corks. There are actually many alternatives to the problem including screw cap, synthetic corks, etc. It is preference to the winery. I believe that plumpjack winery put a screw cap on their 100 dollar bottle of wine. J. Lohr's Cypress brand is 100% screw cap. Silverado Sauv Blanc is screw cap. All are very good decent wines in the 10 - 20 dollar price level.

It is a fallacy that the more expensive wines come with corks. It has alot to do with the wine growers. They choose if they want caps or corks. Price doesn't really come into it. It just looks posher if you have to remove a cork and not just un-screw a cap.
Mind you I would have a screwtop anyday as it means I don't have to give myself a hernia getting the cork out.

The fine wine industry is turning to screw-tops (Stelvin enclosures for the particular) in a big way. You will see more and more excellent wines with this packaging in the very near future.
Corks are vulnerable to biological instability which ruins up to 10% of wines sealed with them, screw tops are not. That, coupled with a world-wide shortage of raw cork and growing open-mindedness of consumers, is allowing this new trend to take hold.

PS. Domaine Chandon in California has just released their Etoile series of sparkling wine with a crown cap enclosure instead of cork...Dom Perignon watch out!!!

Taste, my friend, taste. If you want screw caps than drink cheap wine, it is out there.

Cork is used to stop wine bottles because its structure renders it light, elastic, and impermeable to most liquids and gases. Corks are produced using the bark of cork trees grown in the western Mediterranean.

Hey, I'm with you! For everyday wines, if its good for the planet and easy, why not! I've even enjoyed some of the wines that you can get in boxes now. Cheers!

Cork allows the wine to breathe while the screwcap seals it. Wine has to breathe. That's why no decent winemaker will use a cap.

it's the taste, now they are coming out with the plactic corks, plus the corks keep the air coming coming into the wine keeping if fresher
