God is good and the fear we have for him is a healthy fear of displeasing him. God is just and merciful and does not sentence imperfect people to a fiery place of torment, so we do not need to fear him in that way. God would never want us to worship him out of fear of being punished forever. He wants us to love and respect him for his good qualities.

The saying "putting the fear of God into him" is because God is the only one who can judge. That is why one should avoid throwing stones at all glass houses.

There is is the expression, "He is a God fearing man". But why fear God? He does not want you to fear him. Only moralistic zealots would believe that. He wants us to love and be tolerant of others. God does not have the vices of man.

All through the Bible we read that "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom." Until we recognize and trust the superior wisdom of God we have not begun to fear God. This fear is not abject terror of God, it is respect and honor for Him. If you try to live your life without recognizing God, ultimately you will find yourself (as the Searcher found himself) empty, dissatisfied, and restless, feeling that life is miserable and meaningless. The secret of life is the presence of God Himself.

In that tense it means respect. You fear God like you fear your parents. If you do something bad, you fear your parents because they will punish you, but they still love you.

Certainly following God's word from love is better than from fear...but if one can only bring himself to avoid sin out of fear of punishment, that is far superior to one who has no recognition of God at all.

Because He is almighty and powerful. He made us, and if He blinked, we would have never existed. God can spread disease, cure illnesses, and decides whether we go to Heaven or Hell. That is why we should fear Him.

He is good, but He is also awesome. We tend to fear that which is awesome. He can do anything He wants with us. That is real power, however He choses to love us.
His greatest desire is to be our God, and for us to be His people.
