Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT Southwest!! Southwest is the cheapest about the same percentage of time as any other airline. Also, your seats are not assigned, you get very minimal snacks, no audio outlets, no tv. Try the other airlines first. They're cheaper than southwest alot of the time AND you get assigned seats and the other benefits. It's also not true that Southwest has more direct flights than any other airline. It depends on where you live. If you live in Phoenix, of course Southwest will have more direct flights than any other airline out of there, because they are based there! Out of Denver, for example, you will have just as many direct flights on United or Frontier as you would have on SW out of PHX. See how many direct flights you can find on SWA out of San Francisco International Airport. It all depends on where you're starting, where you're going, and how much research you're willing to do to get the best deal.

Where are you travelling? If you are travelling between any of the cities they serve, Southwest Airlines is a good value. Plus, there is no "first class" or "coach class". You go online to print out your boarding passes. Depending on the order you preregister online, you are placed in Group A, B, or C, and that is the order you will board the plane and choose your seats. No food, no frills, but fast and efficient.
I agree about NW Airlines. We have flown hundreds of thousands of miles with NW. Their online travel agency is the best in the market. They fly almost anywhere (except Australia!) and their frequent flyer plan is pretty good. Except for the boxed snack lunches available for purchase (expensive, no choices, junk food), we have been content. I won't say "happy", because there's never enough legroom in coach class, but NW is usually on time and gives nice compensation perks if they're late or there's a problem with inflight movies, etc.

NWA-KLM-Air France is one year now the cheapest for flights from Europe to the States. Serive is great.
Easyjet is good for domestic european flights, but not as cheap as it used to be 5 years back.

Southwest has great fares too.
I like Kayak.com. It searchs dozens of airline websites to find the best available rates, then it links you to that airline's website directly.
