Are you talking about butter on the pan or butter on your bread. It will be a very odd sandwich if you don't have some type of spread on the outside of the bread while heating.
If you are just talking about buttering the pan well, that depends on what type of pan you are using. Teflon should need nothing on it. Otherwise just spray some Pam or other non-stick spray on the pan. I would not use butter anyway.

It all depends on the kind of pan you use. I've had sandwiches rip apart because I didn't add enough butter to the pan. So, my answer would have to be YES!

If you dont want to use butter on your bread try using mayo. I have had it this way all my life and to tell you it is way better than butter. Either one you use you shouldnt need to butter the pan too, since you already have something on the bread.

it depends on the pan you use...it shouldnt stick if you use a
non-stick pan...but it sure would taste better with some butter.

A simpe way to avoid this. Lightly spray bread with no fat, butter flavored pan spray.

not only will it stick, but the bread will just turn blackish and not the brown so desired in a grilled-cheese.
