Some backed up their answers with phrases like "YES.
I'm 100% sure ,because the Bible says so.".... yes that's a real quote.

How are we ever going to advance as a society when people continue to believe ancient fairy tales ?

Here is a question for you. If mankind somehow magically appeared on earth, even if they were evolved from apes as suggested, wouldn't there have been a first human male and female? Who is to say they were not called Adam and Eve? The name Adam means "man" in Hebrew. The name Eve means "breathed" and is related to the Hebrew word meaning "to live".

Who is to say whether or not science has proved their existence? How could they be identified by archaeological means? By that, I mean how would we know if we found the remains of Adam and Eve specifically when we have no way to identify them? Chances are, they have been excavated...just not identified.

Science and the Bible can peacefully co-exist as long as neither of the two sides become totally militant in their views. As far as God and the Bible go, here's my personal view. I don't know for certain if God/Heaven/Hell exists. I "believe" that He does. But I would rather live my life as God exists, than to live as if He doesn't, and find in the end that I was wrong.

I'm extremely disturbed by that. If people believe in things because "the Bible says so" then you have to wonder what else the believe in because the Bible is full of repulsiveness. Here are some examples:

The Bible forbids homosexuality, and orders Christians to kill homosexuals (Leviticus 20:13). The Bible forbids you to work on Sunday, and orders Christians to kill you if you do (Exodus 31:15). The Bible is sexist (1 Corinthians 14, 1 Tim 2). The Bible supports slavery (Leviticus 25:44, Exodus 21:20, Titus 2:9). The Bible says to kill infidels (1st commandment, Deut 17:2-7, Lev 24:16)

If people say, "I believe Adam and Eve existed because the Bible says so", but do not follow the teachings I just listed, then they obviously have never read the Bible, and those people lack the ability to think on their own.

I'm surprised it wasn't higher. And these same people will touch something with a "wet paint" sign because they don't believe it. :-)
It's one thing to believe in these myths, but what bugs me is that people get so superior about it. Why do they think they are better because they've fallen for this stuff? And, OK if they've fallen for it, but why condemn the people who prefer truth and facts?
As far as being "outnumbered," there was a time when people who thought the earth was round were outnumbered. Those who believed the earth revolved around the sun were outnumbered. Doesn't mean they were wrong. You can't "vote" on the truth. It either is or it is, no matter how many people believe it or don't.

hm. i will pray for you. i'm sure because i have faith. can i say i believe the story as it was told? i don't know i believe there are a lot of metaphors. i think the story had to do with having sex and not being a husband and wife. the fruit of the tree the enjoyment of it (that would be sex) the male serpent (a mans penis) i know a lot of people take the bible word for word but i look at a lot of them as lessons which are told in metaphorical terms. yes some i believe happened the way it said other things i think are there for representation purposes only. i.e. they talk of heaven being paved with gold etc. but material things don't matter in heaven. so i think that the person writing that thought of the most wonderful earthly things he could think of to tell what heaven would be like just to get a picture in the human mind of how wonderful heaven will be. the same said for hell. can you think of anything worse (i'm sure some people could but to some yes it's the worst thing) than burning to death. slow painful etc. and then take that and make it for eternity and never dying just burning. so do i think hell is necessarily this fire pit where i will burn for eternity if i go there? possibly but possibly not. possibly i'll be stuck on this earth for eternity if i go to hell. what could really be worse than that? or maybe i'd be stuck in some Godless void somewhere an abyss of emptiness and lonliness for eternity. now that right there to me would be the worst thing ever.

Adam and Eve indulging... the concept!

If Adam and eve did not exist... there would not have been any human beings! The first of the species of human beings the revered Adam and Eve were the first to surface on Mother Earth as human beings. Their direct ancestors being the ape family!

Now Adam and Eve came onto this Earth. They had both to act as a family. Both were son and daughter of God. That made them brother and sister. How come they could have fathered children?

In the initial stages of development of human life... nothing existed which we could have called as society or community. It was a raw savage world. As per the theory of Charles Darwin, "it was the time for survival of the fittest". It was the time to do and die.

Words like ethics and morality did not exist for even words did not exist during those times. The Lipi (written form of communication) was developed at a much later stage in time.

Even a brother and sister relationship did not exist at that time. There were only two human beings who had surfaced on Mother Earth. They had to copulate and produce children. They did not do it intentionally. They never knew anything about it.

It was that it happened. They did it and something was born. At that moment of time they would have been extremely surprised not knowing what to do about it. Eventually they would have realized it was one of them.

They reared that child and with passage of time another child was born. This time it was a female child. As this small family progressed further... this male and female child copulated at the appropriate time. And the whole family started to grow.

Now there were two families. With passage of time many more families came into existence. Until this point of time there was nothing like morality and ethics that played any role. For the sake of their survival and progeny these families kept on multiplying.

This was the only way to keep intruders at bay. They had to protect themselves from the wild beings roaming Mother Earth.

Ever since the Revelations of God came into existence... the human being who had invoked these words of God realized that the system had to be ordered at some stage. And some system of morality and ethics came into being.

As of today... the copulation by the children of Adam and Eve was a sin but at that time it was not a sin for the relationship of brother and sister never existed in those times.

The development of relationships in human life came at a very later the stage. It was only possible when the community would have developed into a massive strength. Population somewhere in thousands would have prompted the wise and the elders of those times to separate out into distinct families.

We need to understand that whatever is truth today may not hold tomorrow. In a scientific developing world the values whether they are ethical, moral or otherwise keep changing.

We also need to understand that during the times of Mahabharata... the battle was fought using swords, horses and elephants. But now the warfare consists of atomic bombs, missiles and chemical warfare. More on adam and eve here- http://www.godrealized.com/dharma_definition.html

I really do believe that the people that answer that way, simply haven't thought about it. If push came to shove, they would admit that it makes no sense.

That's the problem today. A lot of people are simply intellectually "lazy". They see no reason to actually think about their beliefs. They just go with the flow. In this country, it's Christianity.

But their children won't be that way, nor will their grandchildren. Slowly but surely, the religion anesthesia is wearing off.

NO that doesn't worry me. In the world today people can hardly point out their own country on a world map, that is scary. People still judge others based on race, sex or religion, that is worrisome. Whether people believe in the bible or not won't hold back society. (What is holding us back are attitudes that won't allow people to believe in anything they wish.)

By founding what we do in a clear belief system. Whatis the big deal about living your life with an acceptance of Jesus into your life? We treat people with kindness and work hard. How will that stop society's advance?

It is not just Christians who believe in Adam and Eve. Jews and Muslims also believe in Adam and Eve too. With that many people of different backgrounds and religions believing in god and his creations should show you that it is the truth!

it is rather shocking how a lot of us follow along like a herd of cattle, believing blindly in something that never was. Its sad and disturbing..I live in a small town and if people here found out we were agnostic-we would be ostracized and that's not fair-we are good people with good morals not because we live in fear of hell and all that.....but because we simply WANT to do what is right
