I currently run RS1 of Windows Vista on one of my computers. Is it better? Yes. It has many features built-in that normally would have to added to XP. Windows Mail (the replacement for Outlook Express) has an automatic junk filter...a great feature. You've probably already seen Internet Explorer 7, a part of Vista. It has RSS feeds and tabbed browsing...something that other browsers have been using for a while. But another thing, it's fast and familiar to many.

The start menu has lost some of its cartoony look, as well. A lot sleeker than XP. A box doesn't fly out when you want to see all of your programs, either. It just comes up as a list. Gone are the My Computer, My Pictures, My Documents...etc. It now just says, "Computer," "Pictures," Documents," etc. Much more professional.

There's a LOT more to Windows Vista than I can really cover here and not spend HOURS writing, but it handles video and pictures differently...and much better, if you want it to...but the familiar Preview is still available.

I'll just say if you have a computer capable of running it (I'd suggest at least a 1 Ghz machine with 512 Mb memory...I run a 2.26Gb w/1 Gb memory), it will work fine.

V9 is right. Vista is just more nonsense. Even the world's biggest Microsoft fan, Paul Thurrott, admits Vista has a problem:

"But the problem with the five year gestation isn't that OS X and Linux have caught up and in some ways surpassed Windows, which of course they have in some respects. The problem isn't even that Microsoft promised us the world and then failed to deliver. No, the problem is that there's another OS out there that runs just fine on over 400 million computers around the world. That system is stable, secure, and gets the job done. It's Windows Vista's biggest competitor. To be fair, it's Windows Vista's only competitor. Maybe you've heard of it: It's called Windows XP."

What's more, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has enraged many people with his violence (threatening to kill people and using streams of profanity, all witnessed) and arrogance. Bill Gates is, by comparison, quite a pleasant, mild-mannered sort of guy, and he brought Microsoft along nicely without any violence or profanity.

Avoid Vista.

Built in features? Screw that shite! There's already too many things that are integrated into Windows!

WHY CAN'T THEY JUST MAKE A DAMN OPERATING SYSTEM!? Frack all this extra horsesh1t!

XP is already a fat bloated pig of an operating system. And you think somehow a bigger, fatter O/S is going to run better than XP? (on the same hardware I mean)

PLEASE! You better save up your cash for a new fancy video card if you want to make use of the 'aero glass' (oooooh) interface. People using integrated video are going to suffer huge.
(or just turn off the eye-candy)

I am just dumbfounded as to why it needs such a powerful graphics card for this 'eye-candy', when OSX can do VERY nice visuals and transitional effects with much less capable hardware.... (just like I said, fat and bloated)

Every newer version of windows is slower than the last. Don't let any BS hype or salesperson tell you otherwise.

Maybe five years from now we'll have PC's that can throw Vista around with some authority.. For now, I'm going down with the ship (XP)

At the link I've provided, there is a table showing the prices and abilities of the different "flavors" of Vista. However, it's not worth upgrading if you're computer isn't good enough. I believe there's something in the article about that, too.

Good question...its not out yet, but if you are using XP and like it...I would stick with that untill Microsoft releases the first Service pack for Vista...which you know they will :-)

Yes.
Windows Vista is more secure, has a new user interface, it looks prettier, and will be the future of computing.
