People have little faith in themselves as a race. It is more comforting to turn to an invisible man in the sky then to trust in and turn to each other—or tune into our own inner strength and self belief.
When cornered in a hideous situation we turn towards the comfort of the guy in the sky.
RE: These people prayed for deliverance of these horrible attrocities, and God turns a deaf ear to them.
***It all depends on the persons concept of “deaf ear” -- Possibly God did not give them what they prayed for -- However, in their minds – God let them survive the ordeal.
When we survive the ordeal – we give God the credit. – Rarely giving praise to our own survivor skills, or to ourselves.
I don’t believe I see the value (“good thing”) of natural disasters, plagues, diseases and terrible things like genocide – just to bring one closer to God.
Re: I'm missing the logic in this.
*** Good Girl. That is because there is no logic in it. Keep Questioning – Much better to be someone that questions then to be a blind follower.

Interesting question. Rather than putting a religious slant on it, I think it's more about man's impact on the earth and what we have done to animal and plant life, we impact the climate considerably, so I think that some of the weather patterns are due to the way humans have treated the planet. But, all natural events are also by definition - natural. There will always be earthquakes, storms, floods, tornados, volcanic eruptions because that's the nature of our planet and how new reefs and land is formed, it's how life is supported on earth. Without the so called disasters, there would be no life. Human sin in a religious sense has nothing to do with natural disasters. Sin is a judaism/islamic/christian concept as none of these recognise free will and evolution of self and soul.

The simple answer is the possibility of death increases a persons interest in the divine. It doesn't only effect Christians as a group. Because you were talking with a Minister you are directing this answer towards Christians.

When there are great disasters, either human or natural, people have a need to unite and believe in a salvation that transcends the known world of the living and spiritual. Everyone does this, not just Christians.

God said, when we see these end-time occurences, we should look up because our redemption draweth nigh.
What this means is that times are at hand and soon, very soon we won't be cussing one another out anymore, shopping till we drop anymore, having babies anymore, showing off all the wealth we amassed anymore, going to school anymore, building skyscrapers anymore, and Osama Bin Laden won't matter anymore.
God will take back what's His. He created it all and frankly, we have made a sorry mess of it all. Our redemption does draw nigh. Whether we accept or reject Him is up to us, for He did give us free will and we can do whatever we wish......until He says "No more!"
This is why these distressed people have grown stronger in their faith. They know the Word of God will prevail; that what He said He meant and what He meant, He said. He will come again and we had better be ready.

Okay, those are not good things.
However, anything that would bring us closer to the living God would be good for us.
What he's telling you is that Jesus will take our hand and walk with us through the valley's (and peaks) of life. We don't have to go it alone. We have the living God.
When Jesus was in the garden praying before Judas and the henchmen came...God didn't take away the storm (cross) He calmed the sailor (taking away the fear.)
It's called praising Him through the storm.

God tests us through trials and tribulations and hardships. Or rather, he allows Satan to test us. Satan takes these opportunities to try to win our souls for himself. The Lord knows that his faithful will not be won, and so he allows it. Also by going through such hardships, we are made stronger when we have survived. God knows what is coming in our future. He knows that even harder times are ahead and so through trials, He tempers us as a blacksmith tempers a sword with fire.

That's great that a Christian is saying that death and suffering is a good thing, when Jesus' example and teachings were supposed to release us from all of this.
There is no logic in that. Think for yourself.

When things are not going well, religionists tend to turn to their superstitious beliefs much the same way the proverbial ostrich which sticks it's head in the sand to avoid an enemy. It is a panacea and a form of mass hysteria.
