A hiccup or hiccough is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm; typically this repeats several times a minute. The sudden rush of air into the lungs causes the glottis to close, creating the "hic" noise.

a hiccup is a reflex. its caused by over stimulation in the brain.

Dunno why but it happens when the phrenic nerve can get damaged through surgery or when the diaphragm goes into spasm.
