avi can mean a ton of things. Chances are you just don't have the codec that was used to create the files.
Download and install the K-lit mega codec pack. That will give you all the common video codecs, which should let you play your movies.

Hmm you may need codecs. Try downloading FFD Show or DivX to get the codecs. Or, it may be the avi's themselves are corrupt.

it should have an error message. check that message and see what codec it needs, then go download that codec. if no error shows, then try playing it with real player and vlc player.

several reasons but right off the top of my head:
1) you dont have the right codec
2) they are corrupt
