Are food items considered contraband? I am thinking Christmas cookies, home made brownies etc, egg nog, fudge, etc.
What about CDs, DVDs or cassette tapes? (Money may be a concern, so try going to those resale places where you can buy new or used CDs/cassette tapes/or DVDs -- Gamestop, CD Exchange, etc )
Head phones. Batteries. Coloring books, crayons, puzzles, arts and craft items. Not state issued Combs or Brushes. Bows. Hair twisties.
Youth Bibles. Bible chapters on CD. Disposable camera. Fancy writing paper.
God Bless You for thinking of these babies. We all make mistakes and have to pay the price eventually. But being away from the people you come from or care about at Christmas is the most depressing time of year. Trust me, I know.

Always check with the facility first... You are not the first person to want to do this, and the facility will have a sort of guideline sheet. Sometimes items are prohibited for reasons regular people would never guess (like they are flamable, or may be used in bizarre ways to damage the facility) and particular examples of the prohibited items will be OK. This is sometimes true for pencils and pens, which may be weapons, but rubbery varieties are sometimes permitted with approval.
That said, the things I have heard kids appreciate most were the limited kinds of art supplies permitted and soft cover art notebooks, decent toothbrushes, moisturizer cream (the soaps provided are very harsh), and finally someone once sent in a big bin of individual condiment packages from various fast food resturaunts, like soy sauce and taco bell hot sauce, stuff like that. it did not leave the cafeteria, but it sure improved everyone's attitude toward the food for awhile. Group food could suddenly be customized to taste.
remember if you send things that are unique, the kids do love them, but they also fight over them. In some places those sorts of things are not permitted for that reason.
Some facilities are too hot or too cold for some of the youngsters, and things like fat socks, hats and fingerless gloves (sweat shirts where allowed) actually remove suffering, as well as make someone smile. You could ask prior inmates of your local facility about that... The management usually thinks it is warm enough, in that guards are dressed much more heavily than the kids.

I made my appropriate chum a photobook. yet that takes distinctive time, till you're making it on the internet internet site which you order it from. Wolfcamera, or Ritz, can print in one hour. I advise doing some thing memorable and sentimental. It would not could desire to be some thing she will use. only one thing she will inspect it. something with photographs or interior jokes is vast.

This is a great idea.First talk to the people in the facility and ask if you are allowed to send thing in and if so what things are ok and what things are not.
If you are not allowed to send individuals you might make a donation to their recreation or education programs.
Have fun.

bathroom stuff
scented soap, flip flops, combs, brushes, solid deodarant
They NEED it and want the nice stuff, not the cheap cheap stuff
socks, hats, sweat shirts, with logo
it may not seem like much but one FUBU or POLO shirt can really reach a kid!!

I'd send colorful things, or things that they can use when they're bored. If possible, maybe family photo albums?? Or even albums with any type of pictures. . . zoo animals, parks, etc.
