As a former VW owner I can say that I agree with alot of what other people are saying.
Basically Volkswagens have sound engineering and a nice European flavor for a reasonable price. However if reliability is a priority for you, look elsewhere. I had a 1999.5 Jetta TDI for 4 years and never had trouble with it personally, but I have seen lots of other people have trouble with VW's and statisitically they are a disaster. Check Consumers Reports and don't trust anyone who tells you not to beleive them. They are the ONLY unbiased car review out there because they DO NOT ACCEPT ADVERTISING.
Bottom line, Get what you really like. I would suggest you don't set yourself on one car until you test drive the others in its class. If you are looking at the GLI, you should also drive Mazda3s (Mazdaspeed version if available) the Acura TSX, the Subaru WRX and possibly a few others. Overall the GLI is a really nice car but I would consider an extended warranty if that is what you wind up getting.
If you want German, why not get a nice pre-owned BMW 3 series for the same money. It will be rear wheel drive (the choice of true enthusiasts) and of better overall quality and reliability than the Volkswagen.

I can state If you can get a GLI 2.0 T on a good deal you will be very happy with your choice...
VW has been beating that car up on TV for over a Year now and its still selling on a great level....
The car iit self has a great Standard Warranty. Follows in a great track record. And is a Good Looking car....
You can spend more on a BMW or MBenz but get the same quality...
One thing I recommend to everyone on this and other new cars,,, when your making your deal REMEMBER the sticker price is 1500 to 1900 over real cost....
Ask what is their best price. Compair to list price.
Counter Offer, Always counter Offer even if they look like they are showing you the real MSO invioce...
Good Luck on the Hunt.... I like the GTI and been waiting for the new Rabbit to get here. I might have to travel to Dallas to check one out...

Sorry I have no knowledge of the GLI's, since I am absolutely stuck/sold on the TDI's. Contrary to the idiocy of your first two respondents, my experience with VW's since 1981 has been absolutely superlative, first with their Rabbit Convertible and then with their Diesel Rabbit 5-Speed hatchback and now with their Jetta TDI's, 5-speed and automatic. I have had ABSOLUTELY no problem whatsoever with them and have received anywhere from 57 (yes, I said FIFTY-SEVEN) miles per gallon to now my low of 47mpg, and have driven them anywhere from 326,600 miles to my current 76,000, and I can't see why anybody would drive anything else. But then, you do have the first two idiotic repsondents who seem to know absolutely nothing about VW's and just have a bad attitude. Again, I know nothing about GLI's, and wish you the best with them, but HIGHLY RECOMMEND the TDI's with their excellent gas mileage and their longevity of life when you drive them as diesels are meant to be driven. God Bless you.

The newer VW use the radio as a networking module for ALL of the cars other computer modules, therefore never replace the radio with a aftermarket one, your car will not run..
