Hello, I'm from Germany and I want to know if there are any clothing rules/regulations for hindus, because I must give a lecture on hinduism. I searched about it in the www but I didn't found something. Besides I think that answers from hindus are better ;-). Thank you very much!

Please forget the misconceptions spread by missionaries and muslims about hinduism

Hinduism is a beautiful religion as it gives full liberty to its followers to worship god in any form....no restrictions!!

There is practically no dress-code for hindus. If you study hinduism prior to Mulsim/christian invasions, you will be surprised to know that

-hindu girls were wearing only a small bra on top
- hindu girls were allowed to marry a boy of her choice in Madanutsava- a festival of cupid where boys and girls were allowed to mix freely to chose the mate

- hindu pricesses were allowed to select their own husband by a ritual called "Swayambar" means the prospective grooms will stand in a que, and the girl will select her hubby without caring for status/caste/color/riches

it is only after the invasion of muslims and christians that hindu girls started the dress-code of hiding her face before strangers ( for fear of being raped)...and wearing all hiding clothes

As per hindu scriptures too, there is no dress-code for hindus.

Spirituality and Humanity have greater divine values and essence associated with it than Religion. 'All roads lead to Rome' means whichever religion one follows it leads to the same God. Religions may be many, but God is only one. Many Hindu religious scholars here understand that fact. The underlying fact is that most of the scholars follow Sanatana Dharma and do not connect well with modern Hinduism. A question like 'What is the best religion?' is an immature poll. Do you seriously think such a question has any value?

Yes Hindus have specific dress code. From the ancient times the dress for men which mainly consisted of a langot(under wear type loin cloth, and dhoti a 6 yard long white cloth worn in different style in different parts of India was common. Rich persons wore silk dhoti. The top was usually covered with a open jacket typething which could be tied woith the string attached to it. Men wore one Pagree (head gear turban) made of cloth which could double as towel also. It was amulti purpose piece changed according to use required.
Female wore a Sari and kachh or tie around the breasts .Saree effectively covered the body as it had 9 yard length. This saree was worn in different parts of india in defferent ways.
In olden days the travel over the land was by foot mostly and carrying heavy luggae was not possible. The dress describe above is very effective and one pair would suffice for all normal journeys. .One set was worn and the other carried in a bag.
When they took bath in the river or well they washed the one which was worn and let it dry in wind .In normal weather it would be dry in half an hour . so they could move on easily.
Being a tropical country most of the year used to be hot and dry.
Winter used to be severe in northern regions wher they added one blanket to the dress. this blanket used to be around the shoulder so no packing was required. Ther was another speciality of this dress .It was all people rich and poor wore the same dress. There was socialism. There were many road side resting places built for travelers and these were free.
Temples used to supply food free for all those who came so no need to carry large cash. the peepal and neem trees provide the tooth brush. It was really beutiful and simple life with common dress code for adults and children people lived happily and peacefully till the invaders came from north west and destroyed the cultural heritage to some extent. Two universities and several educational centers were there.

No there are no rules like in Islam. But the way we Hindus and other religions dress these days leaves a lot to be desired. For me it is very good if women do not flaunt their bodies in such a vulgar way. It shows lack of respect. I am sure to start off even Islamic rules were meant to be as a protection to keep the evil eye off the women. When we care about something we wish to protect it.
However, hiding the body is no answer. The discipline should be in the mind. We need to control our physical organs so we do not hurt others by our actions. Only if there is spiritual love will we be safe. It is very easy to make rules but each of us needs to work on ourself.

The initial answer to your question is NO. There is no rules/regulations for Hindus as in clothing.

But if you look at the clothing otherwise (as western clothes were not intruduced by then) they Men - used to wear Dhoti Kurta and Women - used to wear Sari. I hope you know about these clothes. But after the invasion of Mughals and British....People have adopted their type of clothing as well as there was no restriction in Hinduism as per the clothing and the material of the cloths.......as far as they are clean.

I endorse the views of 'pst' and would like to add that Hinduism always taught its followers to maintain purity of their character and be able to have control over the desires to be worthy as a human beings, the superiormost life-form gifted by God as per one's past deeds after completing a cycle of 840,0000 births and deaths in inferior life-forms, so that one may attain 'moksha' or salvation from rebirths. Hence, dress-code was never a compulsion in Hinduism, except that it was supposed to match the natural requirement of the body.

What is Hinduism is too general a question and the scope is too huge to come up with an apt answer. The collection of srutis, smritis, ithihasas and puranas forms the basis of Hinduism which is a vast ocean of wisdom. Given this context Guru / Acharyas form the backbone of our religion. They are capable of giving us the required doses of gnana to spiritually elevate us. Just by reading some scriptural texts here and there and hearing from unreliable sources will lead us nowhere but will utterly confuse us. The first task for a spiritual seeker is to identify the guru and take instructions and start following them. All of us in here are no yogis or sanyasis but normal samsaris. So we all have our own perceptions about our religion. The various scriptures talk of various Gods with specific duties. It does not mean all of them are one and the same nor can we ignore them altogether. The same vedas also say that we need to identify the jagat karanan and do the upasana upon Him for attaining the highest purushartha. So there are many Gods but only one Jagath Kaaranan ie Devathidevan. Till we get it right we are going to be in this cycle of birth and death. But our preceptors have shown us the path. Lord Krishna had stressed the need of a guru in BG and He lead by example in both Rama and Krishna avataras. In BG Krishna says that if you understand me you will attain me. But faith (visvasam) is important in these matters. Let me not bore you more... Where we reach depends on whom we worship and what we desire. All paths do not lead to same destination. Rather all paths join the Highway (Hinduism) ultimately. I mean there are many paths that take us to temproary worlds but there is one path which leads to the world from where one need not return. Nammalwar says "...vaikuntham pukuvathu mannavar vithiae." means ultimately One day one has to reach Vaikuntha.

didn't understand your question properly. well, if you mean clothing rule of pre Muslim invasion, then, yes there used to be. u got to wear pure fabrics(cotton or silk, more over there were no nylons available during those days...lol) and your clothing should not be stitched or so-ed. so, in short, an unstiched pure fabric, that needs to be draped or tied to your body.
hope this answer is what you were looking for
