My son started with severe diaherra and vomiting with no fever on the 9th of Novemeber. I called the peditrician and they said it was probably viral so if he wasn't better by the following Monday to call back. Well his symptoms worsened over the weekend and we took him in on Monday to the peditrician. They did blood workup and stool samples from the diahrea and samples of the vomit. Well this persisted for another week and we called the doctor back and she sent us to the ER...only to find out he was severely dehydrated and also with his abdominal pain, they did a stomach X-ray and said everything was swollen and we needed to see a GI doctor...we found out that he had a small tear in his small intestine...cured by diet. Well, he just went back to school this past Wednesday and I got a call from the school nurse today...high fever of 102 and sore throat. took him to the doctor just now...no strep throat and the doctor said virus again! My son doesn't get sick...any suggestions ?

You know the motherly instinct? Well I'm telling you that something is wrong. My son never gets sick. Something is wrong besides of a virus. Even when he has been sick in the past, he still plays or reads and does pretty much everything normal, but he is sleeping contantly and is in pain and not playing at all...he is so limp and lifeless...

I have 3 children and with two of them I knew something was not right. I took them to Dr's and repeatedly they found nothing. I had to push and push before I finally got the diagnosis for my older son of asthma (which of course I already knew). The baby the same thing, I pushed and pushed until finally I asked the Dr about GERD and what was wrong with him....yeah he had GERD.
The thing is with insurance companies you have to MAKE them treat you. The Dr is working within their guidelines. You keep bringing your son to the ER day after day until they pull their heads out and treat your son. It is not right but it is the only way.
You can also try call your ins. company or medical group. I did that for myself because my medical group allowed me to be sick for months and denied me treatment. I called the ins. company and I was given my referrals right away.
You have to become pushy.

OMG my son is almost the same way. I am been at a lost with him. We put him in time out and he just screams more or starts hitting his head against the wall. He doesn't really listen at all. We tell him not to do things and he screams back. I have really had it with him. I have looked up allergies that can cause behaviorl problems and it says Milk and Wheat can cause these. Well I took my son off Milk for about a week and he seemed like a different kid, he didn't scream as much and actually seemed like a nice boy. Then just recently we put him back on Milk and he is bad to the same boy thats hard to live with. So starting tomorrow I am taking him back off the Milk to see if there's a difference again. I am trying to figure this out. I am really going crazy too. As for the sleeping problem you need to make a routine, like he gets a bath at the same time everynight then brush his teeth, read a book and then bed time. If he keeps getting out of his bed, DON'T say anything to him, just put him back in his bed. You will have to do this over and over until he goes to sleep. But after a few nights he will get it and this won't be a problem anymore. I have 3 kids and my two older ones have a bed time routine and they know when its bed time. My third kid is only 2.5 months so she is not on that schedule just yet. I promise you if you do this bed time thing for a few days straight you will be so happy. It will be tough but in the long run great for the whole family. You should also try taking him off MILK and put him on Lactaid for about 1-2 weeks and see if there is a difference in his behavior. I buy the whole milk Lactaid and then I only put half milk/half water. I do this cause my son likes to drink too much and doesn't eat enough. Good Luck, I feel for you, as I am in the same position. I want my son better too.

This second incident may have nothing at all to do with the first. At this time of year it seems that there are a lot of viruses making the rounds, and schools seem to be prime places for them to spread - so many children in such close quarters. Absenteeism due to colds, sore throats, coughs, various viruses, is common in schools in December, January, and February. Two of our grandkids were here visiting us last week, and now we both have sore throats and a bit of a fever - we could see that one grandson was developing something when he was here.

There are so many viruses that it is often impossible to determine the exact cause of any one incident. However, you may want to ask for a test for mononucleosis for your son. This virus is quite common. Our daughter had mono when she was 12, and she felt quite miserable for a couple of weeks.

Best of luck, and I hope your son feels better soon.

I will tell you we went through this same type of thing when my son was little. He had fevers that would rage to 106 - (never thoguth it possible) - and would stay up for days - he was hospitalized constantly for "unknown virals" - and the doctors sent us to pediatric specialists for gastro-intestinal issues, seizures (caused by the fevers), and even pediatric infectious disease specialists - basically, we were eventually told he had a compromised immune system and a hypothalmus problem - and he would most likely grow out of it. He did not grow out of the hypothalmus problem - but it's a little better.

Good luck - try remembering that viruses do not require antibiotics - so you have to wait them out.

If it's viral, then there is nothing the doctors can do about it. You can't kill a virus, since it's not considered a living thing. If it's viral, then the only thing you can do is let the virus take its course. I would suggest you take him to another doctor to get a second opinion. It could be more than a simple virus if it's gone on this long.

Ask you doctor to referr you to a specialist. Either a GI or diease diagnostic (I don't know what there call like Dr, House) you need to find out what is going on.

Wonder what he's been eating since Wednesday that he shouldn't have? I bet he's got a flare up of the same thing he had...you aren't there at school to see what he eats.

Any kid could have given him food.
