I second the Pinot Noir. Dont get a dry one. I suggest a Chateau St Jean Pinot Noir.

Red Zinfandel or Red Bordeaux with lamb is part of The Creator's plan. Other red wines will work but these wines excel with regard to perfect pairing
NB. Leave the mint jelly for the kids, it ruins the flavor of any good wine.

It depends how you're cooking the lamb. If it's in a full-flavoured or spicy dish then you need a red to stand up to the flavour. If it's a fairly bland dish then white might be better. Or you could play safe and go for rose (blush) which will go with anything. Or get a sparkling wine - they, too, will go with just about anything.

I would recommend a Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is a smooth silky red wine that is extremely fruity. It is characterized with aromas and flavors of black cherry or rose petals along with hints of spiciness or herbal qualities. Pinot Noirs are enjoyed for their soft velvety texture. High in alcohol, they are full bodied but not heavy.
Some of my favorites are:
Acacia 2005 Carneros Pinot Noir - $28.99
Argyle 2005 Pinot Noir - $22.99
Cambria 2005 Julia's Pinot Noir - $22.49
David Bruce 2004 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - $33.99
Longoria 2004 Fe Ciega Vineyard Pinot Noir - $44.99

A nice Merlot, the rule being red wines with red meats but that depends on the sauces that will dress the meat. if it goes with a white sauce then maybe a Sauvignon Blanc.

Usually you want to drink red wine with juicy meats. I recommend Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfindel. Sipping wine after every bite of meat cleans your palate and each bite tastes as good as the previous. I have a wine site, http://www.wineglobe.com where you buy different types of red wines. It gives recommendation on what wine will be good with waht meat.

A traditional Italian Chianti will pair well with red meat and Mediterranean herbs.
