steatorrhoeic hepatosis or steatosis hepatis) is a reversible condition where large vacuoles of lipid accumulate in hepatocytes (the cells of the liver). It may be caused by various diseases, such as in chronic alcoholism and obesity.

Accumulation of fat in liver cells may cause the liver to enlarge. The lipid within the vacuoles is a particular type of lipid known as triglyceride. Triglyceride molecules consist of a glycerol backbone with three fatty acid molecules joined on.

Fatty liver refers to fatty tissue that is deposited within the liver tissue. It can be seen on ultrasound of the abdomen and also may cause elevation of liver enzymes on blood work.

Most people with this have no symptoms. It would be picked up on routine blood work. In many cases there will be little consequence, but if left untreated and it worsens, there may be chronic liver inflammation and cirrhosis which can lead to liver failure.

Usual causes would include fatty foods in the diet, high sugar intake (especially in diabetics), high triglycerides in the blood, and alcohol.

Cutting back on fatty foods, sugars, and alcohol as well as weight loss and exercise, may improve things. Medication may be required to reduce triglycerides if exercise, diet, and natural supplements with omega fatty acids fails to bring them down.

In cats, it's a type of liver failure due to too much fat around the liver. It happens to older, overweight cats that suddenly stop eating for whatever reason. Your cat needs to see a vet, asap!
