And thank you for being responsible to your dog. We are near a military base and it is a nightmare with abandoned animals.
From a rescuer's thinking I have a few hints. This could take some finances on your part.
First, check with vets, phone book, internet(petfinders.org) for a rescue in area. Might be a "breed rescue". There are many good rescues that might foster long term but cannot afford the extra to feed/vet your dog. You may have to sign papers that you are not giving up the dog/time limit to come get. Many of us will work with military to help the pets. But most are undrfunded! You would want to know how to keep in touch and they reach you. Extra donations at this time of year are vital for most rescues. Dogs eat more when cold. Texas may not have that issue but funds are always needed.

Local vets may know of a small set up that is legit and would give more one on one care in exchange for your donations. You would want to take dog and visit of course. Listen to any gut instinct and how the rescue is set up. Hope this helps.
Thank you for caring and not willing to dump your pet--many do!

Im not sure exactly..but try calling any shelters or doggy day cares and find out if they have spots available for a permanent 10 months. If not...put an ad int he paper..interview the person/family to make sure they will be good for your pup. If I was near you, I would be interested depending on the personality of the dog. There is always a nice family around..perhaps someone who wants a trial period before they get their own dog.

It's going to be really hard on the dog - first losing you and your husband, then after it's gotten used to a new home, you come along and take it out of there. Very confusing for the dog.

I would but I live all the way in florida.lol.
There are places where you can take the dog and they will care for it, but depends on how long you will be gone. And they might be a little pricey. Maybe you could go around asking your neighbors.

Ask a couple of your friends, or a good close neighbor! is they are real friends, some of them might be able to help you., or at least watch it some of the time.

i live in ohio i would take him for you but i dont think there would be any chance of you getting him to me. unless you could think of something. but he would be happy at my home i have other dogs that he could play with.
