I use a clicker and use my hands to introduce them to the trick. They learn quite quickly. My cats can meow on que, sit down, laydown, roll over, chase, and play dead .. and most of sik 'em lol. I love my cats.

You can also "capture" behaviors and make them into tricks. Just look for things your cat does often and start to reward them. When you know your cat is going to do the behavior, say a cue first, then reward. After doing this a dozen times or so, give the cue when not in context.

I taught my cat to wave by doing this. He would always jump up onto the toilet when I was brushing my hair or putting on makeup. If I didn't pay attention to him right away, he would start to paw towards me but not touch me. I began to pet him and talk to him when he did this. After about a week I would tell him "say hello" shortly after he jumped on the toilet, knowing he was going to start pawing. After another week or so I told him "say hello" when he greeted me at the door when I got home from work. He sat and waved his paw. Of course, he got a TON of attention for that. Very easy.

Cats shouldn't learn tricks. They are too busy teaching humans tricks like how to open the door and get them food ;).

But really, if you want to teach your cat a trick, try routine and treats. For instance, I got my cat to stand on its back legs when I say "up" by constantly wiggling a treat on top of him and saying "up." He'd go on his back legs to reach the treat. Then give him the treat and call him a good boy followed by lots of petting.

Requires a lot of patience.
Good luck.

Always encourage your cat even though your cat is not doin the trick. My cat knows how to "sit", and give "kiss kiss" to me. At first my cat ignores me, but I keep repeating day after day. I say it as if I am playing with my cat...and I always give him a positive reaction...then my cat accepts, and does it.
Never ever push your cat to do things, or give negative responds...
