In Italian : Tua madre & sua madre .
In Spanish : tu mama & su mama .
What about other languages ?

I 'm Spanish, and the only thing I can add, is that I Love, and exalt my spirit and expectations to be allow in yahoo answer to read every question as well some as this intelligent way of putting it, to show such differences between languages?, Which made me think and believed that the best that Humanity has to give to others is here, and yet to come. Best wishes to all of you, must to be consider Intelligent and accurate peoples and individuals embracing and helping one another to better understand one another, By showing and giving answers, full of comprehension and understanding, from the youngest one to the elderly in this group of answers. please accept this sincere opinion, with all due respect for all the Ladies and Gentleman's. Thank-you. I don't know other languages. But respect, and education has no age. This made it very difficult to vote for the best of all,. its all good.

I agree with American, but add that there is respectable conversation in English, it's just harder to pick out. With other languages they have special pronouns or words and even special ways of presenting them in some cases, to express the relationship between the two speakers. For the most part English doesn't. We mostly talk in fragmented sentences and being polite can be expressed just by saying "yes sir" "yes ma'am" or "please" and "thank you". It's one of many things that makes the english language so complicated to learn to others, and probably what makes other languages so complicated to learn to English speakers.

The first time I encountered the different words depending on number of a certain gender present or what social status a person had I think my brain fried. And I immediately failed the course because I couldn't wrap my head around it at the time.

In English there isn't really, I suppose you could say your mother versus yo' momma, but either way, I think people would take it the same way... and in Japanese, there are different levels of respect for your own parents versus someone else's; my mother is haha while your mother (or his, hers, etc.) is okaasan

Portuguese:

Only recently I realised that we automatically switch from "tu" to "você" according to our interlocutor/interlocutress.

If you're talking to your boss: você.
If you're talking to your mates: tu.
If you're talking to someone you don't know on the phone (asking for information, for example): você.
If you're talking to your boy/girlfriend: tu.
