There are various reasons why an enema may be given, but being given an enema before surgery is not uncommon.

You may be given a Fleet Enema, a 4.5 oz phosphate solution administered from a squeeze bottle. Or you may be given a large volume enema administered from an enema bag or bucket. Tap water, saline, and soapsuds are the most common solutions for large volume enemas, and the volume will range between approximately a pint (500 cc) and two quarts (2000 cc).

You will mostly likely be positioned on your left side with your upper leg drawn up slighty toward your chest. The nurse will try to protect your modesty to the extent possible, but she will need to insert the nozzle or tubing into your rectum.

If you have any questions about the procedure or why it's being given, do not hesitate to ask your nurse or physician. It's wise to be an informed patient--and it's your right.
