It might depend on the state you're in. In GA, you can't check by the plate number, but you can find a plate number by first entering a driver's license number. The state or county website should be able to provide the information needed in your particular area.

Call your local court house, or police station. If they dont know then ask how to find out, guarntee they'll check if you say that you dont think its valid, or you know it isn't
