Men don't cheat more, it is just documented more that men cheat because it is more expected. Women cheat just as much as men do, but women are a lot smarter about it and don't get caught as much.

The biological imperative (evolution) probably serves as the basis for this.

The one who gets his or her genes propagated the most is the evolutionary winner. More often than for females, men can pull a fast one or two and gain themselves an extra descendant or two by playing the field (although that is not what they are doing consciously.)

For females, since stability of their household is a more important strategy for preserving their genetic investment in their descendants, fooling around is more of a risk with fewer potential benefits.

Anthropologically, I think also men still tend to be somewhat more nomadic than women. Even in western society, men are more apt to take a business trip than women. Thus, the opportunity probably avails itself slightly more often for men to cheat than it does for women.

Just a few possibilities...

In my experience it's pretty much equal, both men and women cheat on their mates. Not all of course but the percentage is high. Of course there are many reasons for it, for men it is usually just sexual but for women more complex reasons.

I agree we are smarter and do it better and never admit to it of course.
