Limewire software is free and perfectly legal.
On the other hand. Limewire and other softwares like it are mainly used to share copyrighted materials such as music, movies, software and more. That is illegal. It's like buying a knife and then using it to kill someone instead of using it to hunt for food.
So to answer your question. I'll bet everything I own that the movies you download from limewire are not legally distributed and are copyrighted material. That is a $250,000.00 fine if you are caught.

Limewire is good software i still use it to this day. I really like Limewire, I'm actually an avid user of it. If I want to download a music file I use Limewire always. If you are looking for a good peer to peer software to download music, softwares/programs and videos you should get limewire too.
It's a safe and reliable pogram but like all peer to peer program you have to be careful of what you are donwloading from it. It does not matter what P2P program you use, you always have to be cautious about what you download.
Don't use torrents/downloads from other sites, they might be backdoored.

It is free and legal to own Lime Wire and most other software like it. File sharing is also ok as long as its not copywrited material such as Music, Movies, Software etc.
For all of those who have kids downloading music movies games etc via Limewire be very clear that is illegal, although lots of people do it.
I also do it and if i get caught then at least I can say well i knew the risk, for those of you stupid enough to think its legal then good luck to you, but think about it do these film companies and record producers make the music for you to download for free?
Of course they don't..

Limewire is free and so are the tracks you download.But they aren't legal so you could end up with a big fine if you get caught

The only thing that is legal on Limewire is content that hasn't been copyrighted and has been produced for others to use at no charge.
Basically, if I made my own song, and did not copyright it, that would be free to use and send through limewire.
Anything else is illegal.

Limewire is free however, be very careful. My brother was using it and trojans were coming in through the backdoor (this is what the tech told us) He says that limewire is the biggest problem with this and they manage to get around most virus protections. So be careful!!

http://www.limewire.com/ is the most used free file sharing site. make sure you have anti virus running before swapping any files. the free edition of avg available from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ does a good job. once you have installed limewire do a search for limewire pro. then install this and delete the original. pro is faster.

Arguable whether it's legal or not - could be risky. BIGGEST problem, as Leslie G says, is a constant stream of trojans, though some people swear they've never been caught.
