he is just pulling head out backwards, if its a big problem which to a body harness style collar

My dog was a collar escape artist when she was younger. The adjustable ones with the metal clip would just fall off for no apparent reason, and buckle ones would just undo. I guess she's magic. Have you tried a different leash to see if it's the dog or the leash? Or you could try the kind like coonhunters use, they have a different design of clip

the leash may be a bit old so the clip is easier to detatch so try getting a new leash.
My dog used to do that when we went on walks and he would slip his head out of the collar and run after a bird or something. So also maybe sure the collar is tight enough but not so tight that he cannot breath.

When my daughter was young she would leave the leash laying on the ground. When she did that her dog would go lay on the end of it. You never new if the dog was on lead or off.

Yes several times. Somehow the metal ring gets in just the right postion to pop open the clip and get lose. I dont know of any way to solve it.

I have a border collie and her neck is not much smaller then her head so she can slid out of the collar I have a fenced in yard even though she is to chicken to go anywhere by her self.

Chain him up and go inside and peep out the window. After a few minutes he will reveal his trick.
