I want to surprise my friend with some clothes for her daughter, who will turn 1 in January. I know that sizes vary, so just a general idea would be nice - I'm totally clueless. I guess I'd rather err on the side of too big so she could wear them longer.

average sized babies are sized by the # of months they are, so you would get a 12 month size, the next size up would be 18 month. if the child is average you will be safe w/ the 12mnth

If you are unsure of her size, then maybe casually ask your friend what size clothes that she wears. Just kinda off the wall ya know. Don't give her a clue as to why you want to know. Maybe get on the conversation of kids clothing, then somewhere in the conversation, slip in the question of what her daughters size is. Then when you buy her the clothes, go at least a little bit above what she's wearing, not too much, but enough that she can wear them for a while. Hope that this helps. All kids are built differently. My oldest son was in 12 months clothes when he was 3 months old.....YES you read that right.....3 months old. He was a whopper at birth 10lbs and 5 oz. He's almost 5 now and is in 5T clothes and a size 13 shoe. Good luck & I think it's nice of you to think of her like that!!

Babies today seem so large for their ages! My daughter and nephew both wore 12 months size at 5 months age. If you are unsure, I would suggest at least 18 months size. Also, you can buy certain types of clothes that a child can wear longer, even though sizes are very specific. For example, bishop style dresses can vary in length , so a child could wear a 24 month size for an entire year. Also swing tops or dresses with leggings would provide more flexibilty. Anything with two pieces would provide a longer time frame for the child to wear it. If you are still unsure, buy a 24 months in a spring/summer outfit and the baby can certainly grow into it!! Hope this helps.

If she is on the small side (fairly thin) then 12-18 months should work best. Bigger kids tend to need a size up (18-24 months)

My son has always been "petite" and wears the size of his age...like right now he is in a 4T and he is turning 4 next week. Always been that way, but his cousin who is a full year younger than him and outweighs him by about 10 lbs is in 4T already and almost needs a 5T!!!

my daughter is barely 17 months and already wears a 6. My 5 three hundred and sixty 5 days old wears an 11 a million/2 or now and lower back 12. even though if my lady chum's daughter is 4 and ahalf and nonetheless wears a length 9 in infant. i think it basically relies upon on how vast your newborn is. It doesnt have something to do with age.

My daughter was still wearing a 9-month size when she was a year old. My son, who will be one year on the 10th, is now into an 18- month size. It's impossible to say unless you see the baby that you are purchasing for. If I were you, I'd buy the 18-month size and make sure you give a gift receipt, so if it doesn't fit, your friend won't have any hassle exchanging.

Most people would not buy 12 Months for a baby turning 12 Months. 18 Months is usually what people would buy. If the baby is a remarkably giant-looking baby you may want 24 Months, but only if the baby is one that everyone talks about as a super-big baby.

If the baby is a super-super-tiny baby (so tiny people talk about it) you could buy 12 Months

Bear in mind that if you buy 18 Months and buy with the idea that the baby may be wearing the item in Spring/Summer she'll be getting closer and closer to that 18 months of age herself.

I have a one year old and she wears 12 to 18 months. Any bigger than that she would be lost in the clothes. Hope that this help you. I think it is very nice of you to do this for your friend.

Please go with a larger size. A normal size child is not in the clothes that is marked for their age. My son is 15 months and he wears a size 2t. My niece is 10 mths old and she wears a size 24 months. They are just long kids and need the length. And you can always roll up sleeves and bottoms. I'ld find her something in 24 months and give a gift reciept.

Buy 18-month. Even if 12-month fits now the baby might get to wear it just once or twice. Not much fun for a well meant gift.
