we are moving in to a brand new house (just built) and the entire house is white. id like to paint at least the bathrooms. the bathroom vanities are white with tank streaks, kitchen has tan counters, floors are tan.... etc.

i was thinking tan walls for the master bath but it seems that would make the house too tan. now im thinking a dark red or dark brown with the other color for towels and bath mats, etc....

any suggestions?

oh and we have a window in the master bath so a dark color wouldnt neccessarily make the room too dark.

I just moved into a new house last year with the same issue...everything was tan (the builder wanted everything neutral). In the master bath, which has an oak vanity with a white counter and tan tile, I opted for a sage green. This was a good choice because both tan and green are warm colors...also, there are LOTS of accessories in sage and tan in department stores. The second bath (same vanity and floor), I opted for a deep red. It looks very nice and has gotten compliments, but was more difficult to accessorize...don't want to overdo the red, you know? Also, you would need to primer the walls first if you were to paint a dark color, like red or brown, or you will be putting on several coats of paint. I found that out the hard way.

Dark colors on walls will bring the walls in closer and make the room look much smaller. I would keep things on the lighter side. Sometimes you can do something really interesting by painting one wall a different or darker color.
If you want to test how a darker color might make the room feel, get some large pieces of dark paper or fabric and tape or tack them to the walls so you can get a feel for what a dark color will do to the space. The fabric/paper doesn't need to be the color you want, just try to get close on the darkness/lightness of it.

I painted every room in my house... My hall bathroom is a pretty moss green color. I went with the palm tree decor and bamboo shower curtain from bed bath and beyond. It looks really good.

Kids bathroom? Hmmmm. Don't have kids yet, but the ducks seems like a cute idea. I wouldn't go too crazy on the kiddy decor if your house guests will be using the bathroom as well.

If you want a dark red (nice) but you don't want the vissual effectof shrinking the room, go for two walls in dark red and two walls in a bright color (maybe a shade of yellow)
