My boyfriend is bringing me along to his company's Christmas dinner, and I have no idea how dressed up I should be. I'm in college, and he's a couple years older, so I haven't been to this kind of thing before. Knowing him, he'd say I should wear a skirt and heels, but I'd really like a straight answer here, not just what he'd like to see me in.

Real answers only, please... No smart alecks saying I should go naked or anything inappropriate like that.

Depends on the company and whether they've indicated a certain code of dress.

For instance, if he works for a law firm, then you should wear a nice dress or suit. If he works in a general office environment, nice casual should be sufficient. If he works for a contractor, probably nice jeans and top would be appropriate.

He may want you to dress up because he's proud of how good you look and wants to show you off. Go ahead and humor him.

He's right about a skirt & heels. Wear at least some red. If it is a ritzy party, wear a dress. Red works at Christmas! I just read some of these answers. DO NOT wear a pants suit to a Christmas party unless you are over 60 or weigh 300 lbs!

It really depends on what the dress is supposed to be for the event. I imagine if it's a office thing then you will probably want to play it safe and wear something in between casual and dressy. A long skirt and heels would be a pretty good idea actually. Maybe you should listen to what it is he suggests you wear instead of just assuming he just wants to see you in a skirt...

Every woman, even one in college, should possess the required "little black dress" which, depending on accessories, can take a woman to just about any event. You can bet the company Christmas dinner will be more formal than their summer employee picnic. Dress and heels required - but don't show too much lest you annoy female supervisors or the boss' wife!!!

I would ask him to see what kind of dress people wore last year. Some company parties are cocktail dresses, some more formal, some less so - in that case a nice skirt, shirt/jacket and heels would be very appropriate and not over or under dressed.

find from him, what type of Christmas party this will be, casual or dress up .
Then dress in that manner
If it is dress up. find something nice, but not extreme and make yourself look beautiful. He will be proud to escort you there.
I as a man am and have not been fond of heels on a woman. Some woman just cannot walk properly and then there are also some who hate them. choose what shoe you will be comfortable in.
dont worry to much no matter what you wear, you will look great.
have a great time at the party.

It's hard to go wrong with "that little black dress".

It has been said that you can learn all you need to know about a man by looking at his shoes, his watch, and his wife (girlfriend).

I'm not being a smart@$$. However, you will be doing your boyfriend (and ultimately yourself) a big favor if you dress yourself to look a bit on the sexy side (in a classy way *not* a slutty way!!). Be intelligent and articulate in your conversation and *never* say anything that could be in any way considered to be a slight regarding him.

The harsh reality is that business success is as much about social hierarchical status as it is about anything else. Being the guy with the stunning girlfriend who is obviously very enamored of him, in the subconscious minds of his peers, equates to "man who is obviously worthy of respect".

It all depends on the Xmas party?
But on the other hand, Go out and find you a pretty sexy sleek outfit/dress. Go and show up your man up. Let him be proud that you're by his side. Even get a hairdo to accompany it. That way you will be the party. Do you feel me. Surprise your Boyfriend. Let him know that you're the Star of that party.

I'm sure he will wear a suit and you should wear a tasteful cocktail dress with heels. Depending on where the party is being held you can dress it up or down.

The little black dress is never ever wrong. No crazy cleavage, high slits or backless stuff. Nothing crazy with poufs, rhinestones, etc. Keep just above the knee or slightly above. Have a little fun with your accesories but no more than two pieces. Aim for classy and you wont go wrong.
