Depends on what country you live in.
In the U.S. funeral homes are notorious for “up-selling”, hey it’s a j.o.b. to them, regardless of all the care they exude toward the loved ones! There are some burial laws that have to be followed but aside from that… Don’t allow the Funeral home to “up-sell”!! Tell them exactly what can be afforded. In U.S. a person can be buried in a cardboard box,, because the burial plot has to be lined. Don’t allow emotions to bury you financially over a funeral.

Very sorry for your loss, I too just went threw this with my boyfriend who past away a month, he had no money, family did not want him, I was called, because I was not a blood relative, I was not held accountable. But becuase of his non-existing income, a funeral was not provided but a cermation was free of charge, I only found out about his death 2 weeks after the fact because we had been apart for awhile because he was working in another state, and people there did not know I existed. until they went thru his belonging by that time it was to late. Check with a Funeral home ask, questions, or ask Salvation Army they may be able help, Good luck and please take care.

My cousin's family dug the hole themselves the funeral home people sent someone to measure to make sure the measurements were correct and they lowered the body. The cousins all got together to refill the hole. Sad but that is what some people do. In that town there is a cemetery for those that can afford it and one for those that can not.

If the person was on state aided assistance while alive, I would check with social services, I know that there are some programs out there to help with these types of expenses.

Raise money for the person. Go to people that they knew, neighbors, strangers, explain the situation and ask for a donation. Its rough but if it has to be done then...
